At Travel Modern, we love and highly recommend taking at least one vacation in your life that lets you experience the joy and freedom of truly getting away. Away from smartphones and work responsibilities. Take time for yourself and just take a moment to breathe.

The Most Secluded Resorts Around The World

You may be thinking “How on earth am I going to get away and experience true solitude? The world is just too connected.” Well, we did some digging and have the perfect list of the most secluded resorts from around the world! These five-star resorts incorporate luxury and comfort into a peaceful environment so that you can experience in safety the tranquility that only seclusion can bring. Let’s get started!

Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat, South Africa

This South African resort is a three-hour drive from Capetown, seated in the heart of the Cederberg Mountains. Your worldly worries will melt away as you take in the clear waterfalls, spot the African wildlife (like antelopes, wildebeest, and maybe even the elusive mountain zebras!), and 19,000 acres of land.

There are only 17 rooms and suites so you won’t have to worry about crowds and can avoid socializing too much if you wish. If you really want to live a secluded luxurious life, then we can get you one of the two secluded villas that come with their own private swimming pools, personal chefs, and a local guide. This would be a great option if you want to travel 30 minutes to Clanwilliam, one of South Africa’s oldest towns where you can see ancient 10,000-year-old bush art, buy their renowned handmade leather shoes, and see one of the only places on Earth where rooibos is cultivated.

Kokomo Private Island, Fiji

Kokomo is located on a set of Islands in a rare stretch that isn’t majorly catered to tourists. The hotel gives you a few ways to get there – its own seaplane, helicopter, or boat ride from Kadavu. The boat and seaplane take about 45 minutes and the helicopter takes about an hour. All that to say, it won’t easily be invaded by troublemakers. You’ll be surrounded by the beauties of nature all while in the comfort of your villa’s infinity pool! Turtles, parrot fish, whales, and stingrays are all within steps of a swimmable and thriving coral reef. We love that you get free laundry service and 24/7 room service included in the rate. If you want sashimi at 3 a.m., then you are going to get sashimi at 3 a.m.!

Other cool amenities include – a gym that comes with a personal trainer, free yoga in the morning and evening, tennis and basketball courts, a beach shack with marine life sightings, glass-bottom boat adventures, and a Chef’s Table Experience on the helicopter pad.

Virunga Lodge, Rwanda

Rwanda holds a special place in our hearts! In the spring of 2023, we got to go Gorilla Trekking in the Volcanoes National Park. This was a life-changing experience, and we highly recommend you take the opportunity to do this while staying at the Virunga Lodge in the park. One of the best benefits of unplugging and going to a secluded area is to reconnect with the wild and what nature has to offer. At the Virunga Lodge, you’ll get to connect with the local culture, climb volcanoes, hike various trails, track golden monkeys, and still enjoy comfortable lodging. This lodge is sustainable and dedicated to protecting the endangered mountain gorillas and enhancing the lives of local communities. We think staying here will give you experiences that will impact you for a lifetime and cannot recommend Rwanda enough.

Niyama Private Islands, Maldives

Maybe you’re looking for a secluded resort that is fully focused on beaches, amber sunsets, and clear blue waters. We think you’ll like the private villas at Niyama Private Islands. This resort is a dream for spa lovers and those who need to relax. You’ll have full privacy with a secluded deck, al fresco rain showers, moonlit dips, and a refrigerator fully stocked with gourmet treats. This is a place to go if you’re in need of a full recharge with no contact with your daily responsibilities.

NIHI Sumba, Indonesia

If you’re looking more for an intentional resort instead of just an escape from daily life, then we need to get you into the NIHI Sumba. They state that they are not an escape from everyday life, but a place to return to a life well lived. This resort will try to connect you with something larger than yourself so that you can return to your normal life with renewed purpose. You can rest easy in their villas knowing they are dedicated to philanthropy, environmental protection, and economic development in their community. We love their open itinerary policy so that you can build your own adventure. We’ll get you connected with one of their great guides so that you get the best out of each day.

The Brando, French Polynesia

Named after Marlon Brando, this resort of 35 beachfront villas is settled on the unspoiled beauty of French Polynesia. We think everyone (especially couples), should go here at least once in their lifetime. The pale pink sand, carbon-neutral environment, and cultural authenticity are well worth the visit. Local historians could tell you tales of ancient tattoo practices and the time Captain Bligh stopped here to hunt the mutineer, Fletcher Christian. This place is full of eccentric fun, Polynesian treatments, and fantastic food.

Cape Kidnapper in NZ

Fun fact about this location – it was named by Captain Cook after a local Māori tried to abduct one of his crew! Since then, the cape has become known for being home to the largest and most accessible gannet colony in the world. We know there’s a community of bird watchers in Alabama that would really benefit from getting to go here and check out these birds from Hawke’s Bay. If you also like golf, we can get you set up with a few rounds at the golf course! The sixth hole is considered one of the greatest golf holes in the world.

The Green O, USA

Stay stateside and check out this resort in Greenough, Montana. You’ll get a sophisticated woodland hideaway – if you know where to look. The ultimate private adventure while surrounded by nature, the Green O is one of the best ways to connect with U.S. nature while maintaining an intimate and serene atmosphere. if you still want a more activity-based stay, they have plenty to choose from depending on the time of year (think horseback riding, skiing, shooting sports, etc.). We’ll help you pin down which sounds the best so you can fit it all into your schedule.

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, Canada

For off-the-grid luxury, head up north to the Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge in Vancouver, Canada. Glamping at its best, you’ll stay in a canvas tent reminiscent of turn-of-the-century prospectors along the Clayoquot Sound. surrounded by the valley’s towering forests you’ll be deep within nature. Honestly, it’s almost like a summer camp for adults who love wellness and nature. if you like kayaking, canyoning, hiking, rock climbing, archery, horseback riding, and fishing, then you’ll love staying here.
