Japan, Revisited: Rediscovering a Place That Has Always Felt Like Home
Some destinations leave an impression on you. Others become part of who you are.
Japan has always been the latter for me.
Long before I became a luxury travel advisor, I studied Japanese in college and had the incredible opportunity to live with a Japanese host family. It wasn’t simply a semester abroad—it was a life-changing experience that gave me a deep appreciation for the country’s culture, traditions, hospitality, and way of life. Those experiences continue to shape the way I design trips for my clients today.
This January, I had the honor of returning to Japan as a guest of the Japan National Tourism Organization on an exclusive luxury familiarization journey showcasing some of the country’s most extraordinary hotels, cultural experiences, and lesser-known destinations. It was an unforgettable reminder that no matter how many times you visit Japan, there is always something new to discover.
Tokyo: Where Ancient Traditions Meet Modern Luxury
Our journey began in Tokyo with a stay at the spectacular Fairmont Tokyo. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that Japan continues to set the global standard for hospitality.
We explored the peaceful Meiji Jingu Shrine and admired the stunning architecture of the Meiji Jingu Museum, designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. Just moments later, we found ourselves immersed in the vibrant energy of Takeshita Street, where Tokyo’s playful fashion culture comes alive.
One of the most memorable experiences was a private visit to Senso-ji Temple led by a Buddhist monk.

It offered an intimate perspective on Japanese spirituality that most travelers never have the opportunity to experience.
The day concluded with a visit to the iconic Park Hyatt Tokyo before enjoying dinner overlooking the city at the legendary New York Grill.
Discovering Japan Beyond the Guidebooks

One of the greatest gifts of this journey was exploring regions that many international visitors overlook.
We crossed the breathtaking Kintaikyo Bridge before visiting the remarkable Shimose Art Museum, where architecture, art, and nature blend seamlessly. Spending the evening at the SHIMOSE ART GARDEN VILLA demonstrated just how beautifully modern luxury can coexist with Japan’s natural landscapes.
Another highlight was privately cruising to Miyajima, one of Japan’s most sacred islands.
Experiencing this iconic destination from the water offered a completely different perspective than most travelers ever see.
In Onomichi, we slowed down and experienced authentic Japan through a traditional vinegar brewery visit, a hands-on sushi cooking class, quiet streets filled with history, and an overnight stay at the beautiful Ryokan Onomichi Nishi-yama.
Craftsmanship That Has Been Perfected for Centuries
Japan’s dedication to craftsmanship is unlike anywhere else in the world.
In Okayama, we wandered through Korakuen Garden—one of Japan’s three most celebrated landscape gardens—before participating in an unforgettable Japanese swordsmithing experience. Watching generations-old techniques practiced with such precision reminded me why Japanese artisans are so deeply respected around the world.
The charming canals and preserved merchant district of Kurashiki provided yet another glimpse into Japan’s remarkable ability to preserve its heritage while embracing modern luxury.
Kyoto: The Soul of Japan
No visit to Japan feels complete without Kyoto.
Traveling by Shinkansen to the ancient capital, we experienced many of the traditions that make Kyoto so magical. Dressing in kimono, participating in an authentic tea ceremony, walking through centuries-old neighborhoods, and enjoying exceptional cuisine all highlighted the city’s timeless elegance.
One of the most peaceful moments of the trip was experiencing a private Zen garden, where the simplicity and intentionality of Japanese design create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
We were also fortunate to tour the soon-to-open Capella Kyoto, meet with its leadership team, explore Nishiki Market, and enjoy an unforgettable evening featuring Kyoto’s celebrated geisha culture.
Before departing Japan, I returned to one of my favorite places in the country—Fushimi Inari Shrine. Walking beneath its thousands of vermilion torii gates is every bit as inspiring as I remembered from years ago.
Why I Love Planning Japan
Every traveler experiences Japan differently.
Some dream of Michelin-starred dining and luxury hotels. Others want peaceful ryokans, mountain villages, hot springs, gardens, temples, or family-friendly adventures. Many want a blend of everything.
Because I speak Japanese, have lived in Japan, and continue to return to experience new regions firsthand, I love helping my clients move beyond the typical tourist itinerary. My goal is to create journeys that balance Japan’s iconic highlights with meaningful cultural experiences and extraordinary luxury.

Whether you’re planning your first visit or returning to discover another side of this remarkable country, Japan offers something few destinations can: a perfect harmony of ancient tradition, modern innovation, impeccable hospitality, and unforgettable beauty.
If Japan has been on your travel wish list, I’d love to help design an itinerary that’s uniquely yours. From Tokyo and Kyoto to hidden coastal towns, private cultural experiences, luxury ryokans, and exclusive hotel partnerships, I’ll help you experience the very best of Japan—thoughtfully planned from beginning to end.
